98 By candlelight
For centuries, candlesticks filled with oil or fitted with wax candles provided only sparse light in the darkness. The bronze candlesticks shown here come from the medieval town centre of Harburg around Schlossstraße and were probably made around 1250 in a local bronze foundry. Iron candlesticks from the same site are about 100 years younger.
