During excavations on Große Reichenstraße in 1989, cherry and plum pits as well as walnut shells were recovered from a wooden sewage pipe, which had been disposed of as waste. Further cherry pits were also found together with the remains of medieval stave vessels during excavations in Hamburg's old town. Such food remains allow important statements to be made about the diet of the urban population and open up insights into the diet of people since the Middle Ages.
