At least 18 people were executed on the Gallaberg (= Gallows Hill) near Salzhausen between 1300 and 1600. Because criminals, according to the understanding of their contemporaries, had lost the right to a Christian burial, and thus to enter the kingdom of heaven, they were buried without much effort in the area of the execution site. Two of the condemned were beheaded and their severed heads were placed in their graves. Archaeological evidence of execution sites has only rarely been found in Germany.
