The use of bricks for house construction began in the late 12th century. The main products of the medieval brickworks were monastery-sized bricks, which were considerably larger than today's, and hollow bricks of the monk and nun type for roofing. Imprints of dogs' paws with pads and claws, but also those of cats' and martens' paws are more frequently found on bricks: The animals walked over the still soft blank of the brick in the brickyards and thus left their "fingerprints".
