The often excellently crafted stone axes from the late Neolithic attest to the high level of craftsmanship of the time. Weapon, status symbol or tool? Nothing can be said with certainty about the use of the axes. In archaeological terminology, these axes are called Jutland battle axes because of their frequent occurrence in Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein. Whether they were really used as weapons, however, remains questionable: their slender shape, often impractical for everyday use; careful ornamentation and lack of traces of use often point rather to a function as a purely prestigious object.
