Since the last Ice Age, people have been armed with bows and arrows as well as spears. As offensive or long-distance weapons, they were initially used for hunting, but were later also used in warlike conflicts and made it possible to fight enemies over a greater distance. Lances, on the other hand, were used for fighting at half-distance or as thrusting lances in close combat.
